Is modernizing LACCD’s nine colleges, most of which had gone decades without significant upgrades or major investments. In total, the Program is undertaking more than 350 separate projects, of which more than 225 have been completed.
Is pumping more than $6 billion into the struggling Los Angeles economy, creating thousands of
good-paying jobs. In 2009 alone, the program is spending about $735 million.
Is constructing (or has already opened) brand new academic buildings at all nine colleges.
Is building or renovating libraries at seven of the colleges.
Is building child development centers at seven of the nine campuses, to both train the next generation of child development experts and to provide students with top quality day care for their children. Four of these buildings, at City, Mission, Trade-Tech and Southwest, are already in use.
Is building or renovating athletic facilities at eight of the colleges.
Is one of the nation’s largest green construction initiatives, with 85 major projects expected to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards.
Has installed one of the largest solar thermal systems in the nation at Los Angeles Valley College.
Has helped make the manufacturing of carpet greener. By virtue of its size and demanding sustainability requirements, carpet manufacturers are now, among other things, using substantially more recycled material and are turning out products that are themselves fully recyclable.
Is saving what it is estimated to exceed 25 million gallons of water a year through the installation of more than 1,100 waterless urinals.
Is helping to recharge our local groundwater by using pervious concrete that allows storm water to directly percolate through the concrete, instead of running off into the sewer system.
