The LACCD Honored with Best 'Green' Practices Award

California Community Colleges/Investor Owned Utility Energy Efficiency Partnership (CCC/IOU partnership) recognizes the District for its newly-completed solar project at East LA College

Acknowledging its leadership in sustainability and energy efficiency, the California Community Colleges/Investor Owned Utility Energy Efficiency Partnership (CCC/IOU Partnership) recently named the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) as the 2008 award winner in Energy Efficiency Partnership Program Best Practices in New Construction and Sustainable Operations. The District received the accolade in the Sustainable Operations - Renewable/Innovative Energy Generation or Procurement category for its newly-completed East Los Angeles Photovoltaic (PV) farm. "We are honored that our commitment to the environment is being recognized by the State's academic community," said Dr. Marshall E. Drummond, Chancellor for the LACCD.

"We are looking forward to the day when sustainability is the standard model we all use to decrease our carbon footprint and increase our capacity for energy independence."

The District will be recognized during an awards dinner on Friday, August 1 during the 7th Annual UC/CSU/CCC Sustainability Conference, hosted July 31-August 3 at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

This is the first time community colleges have participated in this awards competition, making the LACCD one of the first Districts to win this prestigious award. The CCC/IOU partnership is a unique, statewide program to achieve immediate and long-term energy savings and peak demand reduction within California’s higher education system.

The Blueprint of a Symphony: Construction Clatter for East Los Angeles College's New Performance and Fine Arts Complex Sounds a Lot Like Music to Students and Faculty

The new 16,000 sq. ft. facility will serve as a vital resource for students and become the heart of the art and music community in East Los Angeles

East Los Angeles College's Music, Dance, Art and Theater students -- dressed in a variety of theater and performance costumes -- welcomed honored guests on June 27 to a celebratory brunch commemorating the ground breaking of the College's new $65 million 'green' Performing and Fine Arts Complex. Immediately after, the College's marching band and cheerleaders led a procession of guests to the construction site for the official ground breaking ceremony for the largest construction project on campus and the second largest in the District.

"This place has such a wonderful legacy," said Dr. Marshall E. Drummond, chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). "The building behind us will give you [faculty and staff members] the platform to create a new legacy that will make this center go far beyond East Los Angeles."

"With more than 2,000 art pieces from the Vincent Price Collection worth an estimated $5 million, East Los Angeles College has the most impressive collection of artwork of any community college in the world,” said Ernest Moreno, president of East Los Angeles College. “With this new building, we finally have a home worthy of this outstanding collection."

The new building's Recital Hall will be a two-story, 77,078 sq. ft. facility which will include a 335-fixed seating recital hall; facilities for painting, sculpture, print making, dance, ceramics/sculpture; design and drawing studios; music and practice classrooms; choir and music libraries; music computer labs; and rehearsal space.

The new two-story, 42,110 sq. ft. Theater Building will house the College's 167-fixed seating drama theater; 118-open seating blackbox theater; costume shop; as well as rehearsal and make up rooms.

The new project is scheduled to be completed in spring 2010.

LA Trade-Technical College Celebrates Newest Milestone in its Bond Construction Program with a Topping Off Ceremony

Ceremony Marks the Completion of Steel Framing for the LA Community College District's Largest Construction Project

On May 29, students, faculty and staff at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC), along with the AVA, Inc. management team, and officials from the Los Angeles Community College District, looked on as construction workers carried out a construction industry tradition by hoisting the last steel beam into place atop of the College's South Campus project.

The Topping Off ceremony marked the latest milestone for the $78 million dollar South Campus Project, which currently represents the District's largest building contract to date.

Along with the signatures of the construction crew and those who participated in the various stages of planning and construction efforts, the beam was decorated with an American flag and a small evergreen tree to symbolize growth and bring luck. The tree also signified a major accomplishment for the team, who experienced no major safety incidences and no time lost on this first critical stage of construction.

"This event allows us to honor the all of the workers who put their hearts and hard work into making this project a reality," said Dr. Chip Chapdelaine, president of LATTC. "We are pleased to recognize the people that are responsible for the South Campus buildings, which will change the landscape of our campus and Downtown LA."

The project features two new five-story facilities: a 66,228 sq. ft. Technology building, which will include technology classrooms, in addition to a 56,302 sq. ft. Student Services Building. Both buildings are set to be built to "green" standards and will feature solar panels and the use of recycled materials – among other items – in its construction and operations.

LACCD: Training Tomorrow's Green-Collar Workers Today

A message from Larry H. Eisenberg, Executive Director of Facilities Planning and Development

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) recognizes that quality of life begins with a job. For more than seven decades, the District has been educating, training and preparing the region's workforce to do just that. Currently, our region's economy has seen an upsurge in green-related career opportunities, which has opened new doors for educated and qualified candidates to secure these highly-paid positions. Today, the District is working to effectively connect high-demand industries and careers to the local workforce, with particular focus on the underserved.

Last summer, with the help of Los Angeles City Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and members of the business community, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) launched several green-related development initiatives through its Regional Economic Development Institute (REDI). In conjunction with the State's focus on Career Technical Education (CTE), officials plan to further advance the skills of our local workforce to fill the gap left by retiring baby boomers.

Since then, the college has organized a two-day Sustainability Industry and Educators Forum to identify green industry sector trends and needs, including career and academic pathways, and proficiencies. As a result, LATTC students can now benefit from several green-related courses and certificated programs With more than 50 green-integrated courses and four green-related degree and certificate programs in career-technical fields,, health, science and liberal arts program, students are already learning the technology of tomorrow today.

The LACCD is proud to offer its students unique learning opportunities and strongly believes in the importance of on-the-job training. That is why the District is proud to host events like the upcoming Green Job Fair-Workforce Development event at the Pasadena Convention Center on October 9, which will piggyback with the "Green California Community College Summit" taking place October 8-9 at the same venue. The event will reinforce the District's dedication to combining regional workforce demands with educational opportunities for students in the emerging green economy.

If you are a green-industry employer and are interested in participating in the Job Fair, contact Michael Flores at (213) 996-2533 or at michael.flores@build-laccd.org. For more information on the various green-industry courses and programs at LATTC, visit

New $3.1 Million Contract at L.A. Valley College Will Provide Campus with New Pathways for Increased Student Access and Give a Fresh Look to the College

Students at Los Angeles Valley College are on the path to improved access to campus facilities after the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees approved a $3.1 million renovation contract for new walkways and roadways. The Roadway, Walkway, Grounds, Parking Lot (RWGPL) for the College's Fulton Entry and Monarch Square, along with a package called RWGPL Wayfinding and Site Furniture Phase 1, will provide the Valley Glen campus with a fresh new appearance.

The Buena Park, California-based Angeles contractor will provide general construction services for the project at a cost of $3,126,000. The scope of work will consist of access improvements to the Fulton Street entry, new lighting, asphalt concrete paving, hardscape (paved areas using hard materials such as concrete); way finding (signs) and site furnishings.

Upgrades will also include landscaping with drought-resistant plants and a drip irrigation system, which is a water-saving method that minimizes water usage by allowing water to drip slowly into soil; walkways, handicap accessible ramps and stairs; a bus/car drop off at the campus' Fulton entrance; a new bus shelter and pedestrian lighting. The project area is approximately 350,000 sq. ft.

The contract is the result of a formal competitive bidding process, and is estimated to generate approximately 31 local construction jobs.

Companies, large or small, interested in participating in the District's $2.2 billion modernization and renovation program are encouraged to visit
